Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has called for resumption of the country-wide protest on January 31 on a single point agenda, seeking relief for masses, particularly in electricity bills.The JI supreme leader announced this at a press conference held at Idara Noor-e-Haq - the JI Karachi headquarters, here on Sunday.Speaking on the occasion, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that ironically the successive ruling regimes in the country, with opposite ideologies and agendas, always shun their differences when it comes to their own monetary interests or supporting mafias in the country.He elaborated that the heavy, exuberant vertical rises in salaries of parliamentarians as well as the issue of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are evident on it. He added that wheat mafia and sugar mafia were sheltered in the recent past, whereas a crises is looming large over the cotton sector as once against the mafias in the sector is being sheltered.Focusing on the IPPs, he said that the sector was always showered with blessings and IPPs were given Rs1 trillion relief in taxes. The JI initiated the campaign against IPPs and at that time the ministers subbed them untouchable, he said, adding that following the JI's campaign, the same government not only touched those untouchable but also renegotiated the agreements, however, the nation wants to know where the impact is?He further said that the government should have passed on the benefits of cancelled and reviewed Independent Power Producers (IPP) contracts to the people. Given the fact that the government was not interested in doing so, the JI is going to renew its agitation campaign against the government with more force and resolute, he said, adding that the government will have to reduce the prices of electricity unit and amend it policies to favor the poor.He demanded the government to reduce electricity bills, end excessive taxation, reduce the petroleum levy, end perks for the privileged class, and relief for the salaried class. He urged the nation to join the JI's campaign instead of waiting for their turn to receive a fatal blow by the governmental policies.Demanding ease for the industry and agriculture sector, he said that the issue at the core is flawed, problematic policies of the government. He asked the government to ensure concrete steps against smuggling and switch to official trade, even if it is barter. He highlighted a recent example in which the country has allowed import of tomatoes from a neighboring country, despite the fact that enough tomatoes are already available at home.On the occasion, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman strongly condemned all those political parties who voted for 140 percent rise in salaries of parliamentarians. He highlighted that the rise was okayed at a time when 40 percent of the country's population was living under the line of poverty. The political opponents in the assembly - be it the Pakistan People Party, the Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz (PML-N) or the Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI), unanimously voted for the extra ordinary rise in their salaries but they did nothing for the salaried class that has paid Rs243 billion in taxes in just six months and the target in this regard has further been increased.Talking about the recent PECA ordinance development that provides the government further leverage on digital landscape, he said that the JI strongly opposes the ordinance. He added that no one wants to support fake news or allow someone to spread hatred against Pakistan or Islam but at the same time political dissent should also not be suppressed in a fascist manner in one pretext or another.He said that the JI supports the media fraternity in respect to the ordinance. He further put question marks on the intent of the government while highlighting that instead of taking the media and political quarters on board and into confidence, the ruling regime opted for an ordinance to impose its will.Responding to a question, he said that the JI has been demanding a judicial commission on February 8, electi ons. He added that the JI doesn't want reelection as the move will support the mandate thieves. Instead, he said, we demand judicial decisions on the basis of form 45 that is a constitutional and legal document.Talking about the issue of Palestine, he urged Islamabad not to take pressure on the issue of acknowledging Israel, instead initiate lobbing on diplomatic front for Palestine and Kashmir. He said that Islamabad should side with Hamas as it is a democratic force. He quoted some media reports as saying that even more than 20 percent of US population favors Hamas over Israel.The US itself is a global terrorist and it has been supporting another proven global terrorist; Israel that has recently killed some 50,000 innocent unarmed civilians - majority of them women and children, he said while lambasting both the US and Israel over genocide in Gaza.It is our state policy that Pakistan will never accept Israel no matter what the other countries do in this regard, he said, adding that Islamabad should ad opt a preemptive approach and come forward to rebuild Gaza along with Qatar.
