Dhaka: A court of Bangladesh has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death on declaring guilty in the case crimes against humanity.
Former interior minister and associate of Hasina Wajid has also been awarded death sentence.
A 3-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal led by Justice Ghulam Murtaza announced decision.
Court declared Sheikh Hasina Wajid former Prime Minister (PM) guilty of crimes against the humanity over killings of the demonstrators.
The decision of case against Hasina Wajid contains 450 pages.
The court while issuing detailed 453 pages judgment awarded death sentence to Hasina Wajid.
The sentence has been announced in absentia.
The prosecution had prayed the court to award death sentence to Sheikh Hasina Wajid.
The court said in the decision that Hasina Wajid allowed to use fatal weapons against the demonstrators. Hasina Wajid as PM used force against the protesters. Fatal weapons were used against the demonstrators of Hasina Wajid. She used force instead of holding talks with the students.
An audio of Hasina Wajid had also come to open wherein she was heard ordering for using fatal weapons and killing the demonstrators. This audio was got verified as well.
Prosecutor told the court Hasina Wajid allowed to use helicopters, drones to kill the demonstrators. Hasina Wajid incited people against the demonstrators through provocative speeches.
Family members of those killed in anti government demonstrations last year were also present in the court.
Stringent security measures were made in Dhakka to avert any untoward situation.
The personnel of Bangladesh Border Guard and Rapid Action Battalion beside police have been deployed in different areas of the city.
It is pertinent to mention here about 1400 people were killed during demonstrations during last year summer as per UN report.
Later Hasina Wajid fled to India in August 2024. She is living life in exile in New Delhi.
The former PM Hasina Wajid is charged with being master mind of killings of hundreds of protesters.
On the other hand Hasina Wajid has said " I don't care for whatever decision court makes. All the allegations leveled against me are false.
