Islamabad: A commemorative event was held in Islamabad on the 13th martyrdom anniversary of Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Shaheed Mohammad Afzal Guru at The Strong Base School System where hundreds of students were present to pay tribute and express solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir
Hundreds of students warmly welcomed Ms Mushaal Hussein Mullick and raised slogans in support of the Kashmir struggle reaffirming their commitment to justice freedom and human dignity a collective prayer was also offered for all the martyrs of Kashmir and Pakistan including Shaheed Mohammad Afzal Guru and for peace unity and protection of the oppressed
The event was addressed by the Chief Guest Ms Mushaal Hussein Mullick Chairperson Peace and Culture Organisation and Former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Human Rights and Women Empowerment and wife of jailed Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Mohammad Yasin Malik
In her address Mushaal Hussein Mullick stated that Shaheed Afzal Guru endured severe physical and psychological suffering during prolonged court proceedings and incarceration. She said that despite serious concerns regarding due process he was executed in Tihar Jail and the hanging was justified under the claim of satisfying the collective conscience raising serious questions about justice and politicisation of the judiciary
She strongly condemned the fact that the mortal remains of Shaheed Afzal Guru were not returned to his family denying them their basic human and religious right of burial and demanded that his remains be handed over immediately
Highlighting the wider pattern of injustice Mushaal Mullick also drew attention to the continued incarceration of Mohammad Yasin Malik who remains imprisoned and is facing a potential death sentence She said these cases reflect the use of courts as instruments of political repression in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir
Speakers at the event condemned the ongoing brutalities denial of fair trials and systematic human rights violations in IIOJK and called upon the international community global human rights organisations and legal forums to intervene against legal injustice being inflicted upon Kashmiris through what were termed kangaroo courts
The participants demanded international intervention to ensure fair legal processes for Kashmiri prisoners an end to politically motivated trials in IIOJK the immediate return of the mortal remains of Shaheed Mohammad Afzal Guru to his family and justice accountability and protection of fundamental human rights in Kashmir
