Islamabad:The Islamabad Model Jail, spread over 90 acres, is expected to become operational within the next three to five days.
The facility has been named 'Federal Prison' and will initially accommodate around 1,500 prisoners transferred from Adiala Jail, including both convicted and under-trial inmates.
Initially, only male prisoners will be housed at the facility. Women and juvenile prisoners will be shifted in a subsequent phase.
According to the available details, the new jail will not have a separate B-class category for prisoners. All inmates will be provided with the same facilities.
The transfer of prisoners from Adiala Jail to the Islamabad facility is also expected to reduce the burden on police resources. The estimated monthly savings on fuel alone are around Rs10 million.
