Islamabad:"Failure to Provide Justice to the Victims of Jaranwala Even After a Year is a Government Failure," says Akmal Bhatti, Chairman Minorities Alliance Pakistan (MAP)."The Jaranwala tragedy is a black mark on the face of Pakistani society. The fact that the victims have not yet received justice is a mockery of the claims made by government and police officials. 99% of the accused in the Jaranwala incident are free, mocking the government and the helplessness of Christians. The investigative officers and their committees have failed to fulfill their constitutional role, and at present, only 11 individuals are behind bars."On the solemn occasion of the one-year remembrance of the Jaranwala incident, Minorities Alliance Pakistan (MAP) held a press conference to honor the victims of the tragic violence that struck the Christian community on August 16, 2023, in which nearly 10,000 people were breaking the crosses on every church and cemetery across approximately a 10-kilometer area in and around Jaranwal a, demolishing and looting homes. Twenty-six churches were set on fire, burning thousands of copies of the Holy Bible. Around 250 families were left homeless, and thousands fled the city, fearing for their lives.However, all the attackers, including their ringleaders and the influential local leaders of their groups, were released. The investigation was flawed, with only 303 people being sent to judicial lockup. Hundreds were arrested initially to appease the Christian community, but they were later released. Of the 303 individuals who were jailed, only 11 remain behind bars, while the rest are free due to poor investigation, negligence, and discriminatory behavior."On the first anniversary of the tragic events in Jaranwala, we come together to remember and honor those affected by the devastating incident on the 16th of August 2023, in a horrific display of religious intolerance. The scars of that day remain deep, but the resilience and courage shown by the survivors continue to inspire hope and calls for justice.Chairman Minorities Alliance Pakistan in his statement said that the Jaranwala incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Pakistan. It is imperative that the government not only brings the perpetrators to justice but also takes concrete steps to protect vulnerable communities from future attacks. It is appalling to see the authorities' slow response and inadequate measures to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. On this anniversary, we once again urge the government to ensure justice for the victims and to implement policies that protect religious minorities from discrimination and violence.The remembrance event is open to all members of the community and the public, reflecting a commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue. On this occasion we will also wear black armbands and host black flags on homes as a mark of protest against the violence and injustice meted out to the victims of Jaranwala.
