Karachi: Inspector General of Sindh Police Javed Alam Odho said that action has been taken not only against the extortionists whose names were provided by the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD), but also against other extortionists. He said, 'I will not rest until the Mir Raza murder case is solved. I will try to have the problems faced by builders and developers resolved through a committee headed by the Commissioner. 'He said that the crime rate in Karachi has declined by 14 percent, while incidents of murder and violence across Sindh have decreased by 70 percent. A total of 54 cases have been solved, 72 suspects arrested, 12 suspects arrested in injured condition, and nine suspects killed. He added that the police had succeeded in obtaining Red Notices for four extortionists.Chairman of the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD), Muhammad Hasan Bakhshi, said that builders were receiving extortion calls from numbers based in Uzbekistan and other countries. The extortionists were threa tening to carry out bomb attacks on builders' projects. He said that the investigation into the Mir Raza case was undermining citizens' confidence in state institutions.They expressed these views while addressing a ceremony held at ABAD House. DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, Additional IG Azad Khan, the SSPs of all four districts, ABAD Senior Vice Chairman Syed Afzal Hameed, Vice Chairman Tariq Aziz, Southern Region Chairman Ahmed Owais Thanvi, former chairman Junaid Ashraf Talpur, and a large number of ABAD members were also present.IG Sindh Javed Alam Odho further said that no crime incident had occurred on the National Highway during the past six months, and that the overall law-and-order situation in Sindh was satisfactory.Regarding the Raza Amir case, he said that an initial report had emerged during the investigation, but different facts subsequently came to light, creating difficulties for the investigation team. He said that the police would not rest until the elements involved in the Raza Amir c ase were exposed.The IG Sindh further said that Red Notices had already been issued for extortionists operating from abroad. 'The paperwork is lengthy, but the police have already done the necessary work in this regard, ' he said. He added that the matter had been somewhat delayed because of the war situation involving Iran, but action against gangsters based abroad would continue. If they were brought back to Pakistan, they would be given due punishment under the law.The IG Sindh said that work was also underway on another important case and that good news would be shared soon. He said builders were among the groups most affected by extortion and that the police would play their role in addressing their complaints and ensuring their protection.The ABAD chairman said that the parents of Mir Raza should be provided justice. He added that after Surjani and Malir, complaints of land grabbing were now also emerging along the M-9 Motorway. ABAD had raised the issue of land grabbing at every relevant forum, h e said, adding that effective action against the land-grabbing and extortion mafias in Karachi was essential.Hasan Bakhshi said that when ABAD representatives went to reclaim illegally occupied land, cases were instead registered against them. He said FIRs were even registered against people who were not physically present on their own properties. 'Even after they obtain bail, the police arrive to conduct raids, while court orders to vacate illegally occupied properties are not implemented, ' he said.He alleged that Samad Kathiawari and Jameel Chhanga were highly active in extortion and called on the relevant authorities to take action against them and all other extortionists. He said police assistance was needed to protect the businesses and investments of ABAD members.Hasan Bakhshi said that Bilawal Zardari had established various committees, including a Business Coordination Committee, while the Business Coordination Committee and other committees were being headed by the Commissioner of Karachi. He said effective measures should be taken through these committees to resolve the problems faced by the business community.Meanwhile, Syed Moez Zaidi, Convener of ABAD's Law and Order Committee, said that extortion was the biggest problem faced by ABAD members. He appealed to the Inspector General of Sindh Police to take strict action against extortionists.
