Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan has demanded the authorities to hold a detailed examination before deciding the fate of those buildings declared 'dilapidated' in Gulistane Johar and other areas without proper testings. The JI leader expressed these views while addressing a press conference held at Gulistane Johar, here on Sunday. He said that declaring buildings as dangerous without following procedures and due diligence was tantamount to injustice. He said that Faisal Cantonment issued a list of 62 residential units -- bungalows and apartments -- that were labeled as dangerous, without any engineering survey. He said that the move by the cantonment created deep unrest among the potentially affected people. The JI stalwart said that builders should be held legally responsible for maintenance of apartments, whereas cantonments need to ensure water, sewerage and road facilities to residential units in its limits. He further said that the residents of Gulistane Johar and other areas of Faisal Cantonment should not be threatened or forced out of their houses. They have the right to live peacefully, he said, adding that no injustice would be tolerated in this regard. On the occasion, he announced that a help desk had already been established by the JI to provide information and support to the affected residents. He further said that the JI would also knock the door of the judiciary if needed be.Furthermore, he said that the JI responded positively to the appeal by the affected residents and took up the issue. He added that the JI had already constituted a committee and held a meeting with the chief executive officer of the Faisal Cantonment Board to share the concerns and suggestions in order to resolve the issue in a friendly and positive manner. He highlighted the plights of Karachi, saying that both the province and the centre receive massive shares from the city but unfortunately neither the centre nor the province own Karachi. As a result, he said, the economic hub of the co untry turned into a hub of problems.Six cantonment boards along with KMC operate in Karachi whereas the lack of performance and coordination result in sufferings for Karachiites, he said.JI leaders Naeem Akhtar, Ibnul Hassan Hashmi, Engineer Azizuddin Zafar, Zahid Askari and others flanked Monem Zafar Khan at the presser.
