SRINAGAR:Dr. Ghulam Rasool, General Secretary of the Jammu Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP), has strongly condemned the Waqf Board's decision in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, expressing serious concern over what he described as interference in religious affairs and a threat to the autonomy of religious institutions.
Dr. Ghulam Rasool made a fervent appeal to all religious scholars, imams, religious leaders and representatives of religious institutions to strengthen their unity and solidarity. He urged them to build upon the unity they have demonstrated under the leadership of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Mufti Dr. Mohammad Umar Farooq and make their collective efforts more active, organised and effective. He emphasised that raising a united and peaceful voice against interference in religious affairs is an urgent necessity.
He stated that Waqf institutions are closely connected with the religious and collective interests of the Muslim community. Therefore, any decisions concerning these institutions must respect religious freedom, institutional autonomy and the religious sentiments of the people. He stressed that the relevant religious leadership and scholars must be taken into confidence before decisions affecting religious affairs are made.
Dr. Ghulam Rasool observed that India claims to be the world's largest democracy; however, government interference in religious affairs raises serious questions about its democratic credentials and respect for religious freedom. He emphasised that such actions should be brought to the attention of the international community, human rights organisations and relevant international institutions so that India's claims of democracy and religious tolerance can be assessed in light of its actions on the ground.
He further stated that the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir are already facing numerous challenges concerning their political, civil and religious rights. Under these circumstances, interference in religious affairs could further aggravate public concern and resentment. He maintained that protecting religious freedom and the autonomy of religious institutions is a fundamental requirement of any society that claims to uphold democratic values.
In conclusion, Dr. Ghulam Rasool urged all religious scholars and leaders to strengthen their unity under the leadership of Mirwaiz Mufti Dr. Mohammad Umar Farooq and continue a united, organised and peaceful struggle against the Waqf Board's decision and all other measures that interfere in religious affairs. He called upon them to remain steadfast in safeguarding religious freedom, the autonomy of Waqf institutions and the religious rights of the Muslim community.
