Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passes away at 92

Mumbai: Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai on Sunday, due to cardiac and respiratory issues.

Asha Bhosle died at Breach Candy Hospital after being admitted for a chest infection.

Born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, India, Asha Bhosle was the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Raised in a musical environment, she began her singing career at a very young age and quickly established her own identity in the film industry.

She started her professional journey in 1943 at the age of just 10 and received classical music training from her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar. She rose to fame in the 1950s and went on to become one of the most celebrated playback singers in the world.

Over her decades-long career, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in over 20 languages, contributing to more than 1,000 Bollywood films. Her voice was known for its versatility, ranging from classical and ghazals to qawwalis and modern film songs.

She received numerous awards and honors, including seven Filmfare Awards. In 2000, she was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and in 2008, she received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. In 2011, the Guinness World Records recognized her as the most recorded artist in music history.

Asha, who got married to Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949 when she was 16 and later in life married collaborator and composer R D Burman, is survived by her son Anand and her grandchildren.

Among Asha's most popular songs are 'Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar', 'In Ankhon Ki Masti', 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai', 'Piya Tu Ab to Aaja', Duniya Mein Logon Ko', and Zaara Se Jhoom Loon Main', among others.
