LHC directs environment department to take practical steps to control smog

Lahore: Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed Environment Department to issue fitness stickers to heavy transport, large vehicles, rickshaws and motorcycles on priority basis.

The petitions filed by citizen Haroon Farooq and others came up for hearing before LHC bench led by Justice Shahid Karim Friday.

Representatives of several departments including Environment department appeared in the court.

The court ordered to conduct survey in regard to performance of water treatment plants installed in Industrial units so that the practical steps for overcoming pollution could be monitored.

Member of Judicial Water Commission (JWC) informed the court LDA has not shifted birds from Tollinton market despite court's orders.

The court expressed resentment over it.

Counsel for Punjab government told the court government has allocated funds in the budget for installation of 2 lac water meters.

The court directed official letter on progress report be presented before it on next hearing.

The court while expressing reservations for not granting health allowance to traffic wardens remarked finance department has become hurdle. " allowance is not granted to whom it should be given .

Expressing concern over climate change the court remarked weather has become too much hot. Temperature has risen by two degree centigrade. Heat waves, climate change and other threats are there side by side. We will have to take serious steps.

The court while expressing regret over public attitude remarked people are wasting water. They are not feeling its importance. Ask from people of Sindh what is importance of water.

The court while directing all departments to file progress reports adjourned the hearing of the case till June 17.
