LHC halts ongoing underground parking projects at projects at Taxali Gate and Sheranwala Gate in Lahore


Lahore: Lahore High Court (LHC) has halted ongoing underground parking projects at Taxali Gate and Sheranwala Gate in Lahore while hearing the petitions filed in connection with eradication of smog.



Justice Shahid Karim remarked he is grieved over death of mother and daughter who fell into a manhole.



The court has issued contempt of court notice to the Vice Chancellor Punjab University and registrar Punjab university for not halting cutting of trees in Punjab university despite court’s orders.



The petitions filed by the citizen Haroon Farooq and others came up for hearing before Justice Shahid Karim of LHC Friday.



Syed Kamal Haider and Mian Irfan Ikram members of environmental commission told the court the cutting of the trees was carried out in Punjab university despite court’s orders which is tantamount to contempt of court.



The counsel Azhar Siddique identified the cutting of trees around Data Darbar and said they were taking the life of trees and now they have taken life of a mother and a minor baby. Mother and daughter fell into manhole two days earlier and died.



Justice Shahid Karim remarked a tragic incident has taken place.



The court while halting ongoing underground parking project at Taxali Gate and Sheranwala Gate has summoned DG LDA and Advocate General Punjab on next hearing.



During the hearing of the case the court expressed resentment over cutting trees from Punjab university.



The court remarked what has been done by DG PHA so far. He has not held even a single meeting.



DG PHA along with vice chancellor should have taken notice on his own on the cutting of trees in Punjab university. But PHA role has not been seen any where.



The court directed the DG PHA to take suo-motu action and meet with the Vice Chancellors of all universities



The court remarked the matter of cutting of trees in Punjab university will be sent to anti corruption.



The court issued contempt of court notice to Vice chancellor Punjab university and registrar Punjab university.



The court while directing DG PHA to appear before it adjourned the hearing of the case till February 02.
