Monem Zafar expresses grave reservations over results, procedure

Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan on Wednesday expressed serious reservations over the MDCAT arrangements and results in Sindh, saying that injustice and mismanagement with Karachi students was unacceptable. He said on Sept 20, as many as 10,964 candidates appeared in the MDCAT in Karachi for whom only two centres - at NED University and Dow University - were set up.He said Karachi students were facing difficulties at every level - Matric, Intermediate and medical college aptitude tests - due to the Sindh government's mismanagement. While only two centres were set up for around 11,000 students in Karachi, six centres were established for almost the same number of students in Lahore and 19 centres for 16,000 students in Peshawar, he pointed out.He said more than 138,000 candidates were registered for MDCAT across Pakistan. According to the results issued in Sindh, no candidate from Karachi is among the top 20, while 18 Karachi candidates are in the top 100. On the other hand, f ive candidates from Tharparkar are in the top 20, which requires a transparent investigation, he added. He demanded formation of an empowered and independent inquiry committee to conduct a transparent and forensic review of the entire MDCAT process, including arrangements, results and merit list.He asked Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal and provincial Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho to explain what steps the federal and provincial governments had taken regarding the issues faced by Karachi students and irregularities in MDCAT results. He said the Sindh government had weakened the system of educational boards and established a system of examinations through testing authorities, causing continuous difficulties for students and parents. He announced that JI Karachi would set up a desk of its Public Aid Committee for guidance of the affected students and resolution of their issues.Talking about the killing of three Pakistani citizens held hostage by Somali pirates, he termed the loss of lives as extre mely tragic and alarming, and demanded that the government take immediate steps to bring back the bodies of the martyrs and provide best medical facilities to the injured. He said the government had failed to take effective measures for over five months for the recovery of the hostages, resulting in the loss of precious Pakistani lives. He said Somali pirates had hijacked a vessel on April 21 carrying 10 Pakistani nationals. On Sept 29, during an operation by Somalia and Puntland Maritime Police Force, the pirates opened fire, killing five persons, including three Pakistanis, while several others were injured. According to available information, the martyred Pakistanis include Kashif Umar, Mahmood Ansari and Rafiullah. All three belonged to Karachi and their families had been raising their voice on different forums for months for their release. The families had also staged protests and sit-ins, and in early September, they protested outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs liaison office, he added.Monem Z afar said the JI had contacted the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister and other relevant government institutions for the release of the hostages, but no timely and result-oriented progress was made by the government.Highlighting the never ending issue of loadshedding, he said life in the city had been paralysed due to 18-hour-long power outages in different areas of the city. The punishment of a few per cent power thieves cannot be given to the entire city, he said.He demanded an end to load-shedding in Karachi, forensic audit of K-Electric and ensuring uninterrupted power supply to citizens.JI Karachi Information Secretary Zahid Askari and District Qaid-e-Azam Secretary Noman Hameed were also present on the occasion.
