Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said ongoing reforms in Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) are good omen.

"Ongoing reforms in FBR are good omen but the need is there these be made durable and completed within prescribed time frame. Harmonizing tax system with contemporary requirements is need of hour so that national income rises and tax burden on citizens lessens, he said this while presiding over a high level review meeting held in connection with ongoing FBR reforms Wednesday.

The meeting was informed that due to digitalization of FBR, enforcement actions and other reforms, the tax-to-GDP ratio has hit historic increase of 1.5 percent.

No of persons filing tax returns has surpassed 72 lac in 2025 which is remarkable increase as compared to previous year.

PM directed that enforcement be made more effective to cub informal economy, a comprehensive plan for restructuring digital wing be evolved and its targets and time frame for achieving these targets be set in clear terms.

PM directed that all stake holders be included in tax reforms, business community be facilitated and proposals of international experts be absorbed therein.

The PM appreciated FBR authorities and officers working on reforms and directed them to present report on practicable targets and time line for their realization next week.

Meeting was attended by information minister Atta Ullah Tarar, minister for economic affairs Ahad Cheema, Law minister Azam Nazir Tarar, chairman FBR and the respective officials.
