Dhaka: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, met newly elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, following his oath-taking ceremony, representing the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Minister Iqbal conveyed Pakistan's congratulations on Prime Minister Rahman's election and extended an official invitation for a state visit at a mutually convenient date. The leaders discussed revitalizing bilateral relations, enhancing regional cooperation, and promoting a shared geo-economic vision for South Asia, including efforts to revive SAARC.

To strengthen academic and research collaboration, Minister Iqbal proposed a 'Pakistan-Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor,' including twin-university agreements, student and faculty exchange programs, and scholarship opportunities, with 500 scholarships allocated for Bangladeshi students, 75 of whom have already proceeded to Pakistan.

The two leaders also discussed collaboration in digital governance, data systems, SMEs, and cottage industries, aiming to increase regional competitiveness in global markets. Expanding direct flights and improving connectivity were highlighted to facilitate trade, tourism, and people-to-people contacts.

Cultural cooperation was emphasized through the revival of the Iqbal Academy in Dhaka and joint celebrations of Allama Muhammad Iqbal's 150th birth anniversary next year. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing bilateral ties, regional peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
