Islamabad: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has directed to use Pakistan Railways land for business activities with the cooperation of private sector.
This was said by PM Shehbaz Sharif in a meeting held under him with reference to Pakistan Railways Monday.
Meeting was attended by federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Aleem Khan, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Khawaja Asif, Jam Kamal Khan, Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Owais Leghari and officers of respective departments.
PM said Pakistan Railways should evolve strategy for promoting trade in the region particularly with Central Asian countries.
Better travelling services be provided to passengers in Pakistan Railways under public-private partnership.
There is need to attract passengers competitively by Pakistan Railways. .
PM called for replacing the old system of Railways with the contemporary technology.
The PM was briefed on the steps being taken for the revival and development of Pakistan Railways.
During the briefing it was told that Pakistan Railways had to sustain loss of Rs 10 billons during devastating flood in 2022. Railway tracks remained submerged in water for 35 days.
Pakistan Railways improved its performance through different steps after 2022 floods. Profit has been earned equal to preliminary cost in freight operations so far.
18 percent unnecessary staff has been relieved during the rightsizing process of Pakistan Railways.
Work is underway on communication project of Pakistan railways on fast track basis.
