Lahore: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has termed the petroleum levy an extortion tax and demanded that the government immediately abolish it and reduce fuel prices to provide relief to the inflation-hit public.In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the people of Pakistan had paid Rs1,900 billion as petroleum levy, describing it as a jagga tax that had no connection with the actual price of petroleum products.He said the government was collecting Rs125 in levies and taxes on every litre of petrol, while on the other hand, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) were being paid Rs2,000 billion annually for electricity that was not even generated.The JI chief urged people to raise their voice for their rights and participate in the protest movement, calling on citizens to block highways across Pakistan on August 7 to draw the government's attention towards public grievances.He demanded the abolition of the petroleum levy, a review of IPP agreements in the p ower sector, and effective measures to provide genuine relief to people burdened by inflation.
