Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan, while addressing a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq-- the JI Karachi headquarters, on Sunday said that the city is currently in a state of crisis. Every civic problem remains unresolved while the rulers are completely negligent.The PPP government and widespread corruption have pushed Karachi to the edge of destruction, and the entire city resembles ruins, Monem Zafar Khan said, adding that roads are broken in every locality and the BRT Red Line project is costing citizens their lives.He said the Red Line project began in 2022 and was supposed to finish in 2024, but has now been extended to 2026. Even its 26.5 km stretch does not appear close to completion after three to four years. Major intersections have been dug up without any planning, and no proper alternative routes have been provided. Hundreds of thousands of students suffer daily on University Road, while the authorities remain indifferent.Criticizing the PPP government, he said that governance is limited to mere claims while real powers are never devolved. The 'occupier mayor' Murtaza Wahab claimed he would make the roads usable within 60 days, but it is unclear when those 60 days will start. Sewage lines are overflowing, and roads have turned into patches of potholes. He said that Jamaat-e-Islami, through self-help initiatives in its towns, has installed thousands of manhole covers in two years-proof that work is possible when intent is sincere.He added that whether it is the land-grab incident in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, the NEPA tragedy, the parks of Clifton, or the city's devastated roads, Jamaat-e-Islami has stood with the citizens everywhere. Following the massive public gathering held from November 21 to 23, the party has resolved to intensify its struggle for Karachi's rights. A Charter of Karachi will be introduced against the oppressive system, corruption, injustice and the land-grab mafia, along with a complete plan for the revival of the city.Monem Zafar said the constructio n of the Gulistan-e-Johar underpass is causing extreme hardship for the public. The Water and Sewerage Corporation receives billions every year but its performance remains zero. Similarly, K-Electric continues to extract an additional Rs. 4 billion from citizens in the name of utility charges. The first phase of the $1.6 billion KWSSIP project has yet to deliver any visible relief. From 2019 to 2025-six years-the city's water and sewerage system remains dysfunctional. The K-IV augmentation project has worsened matters. No alternative routes exist for the hundreds of thousands of residents of Scheme 33 and Safoora."The Karimabad underpass has been pending for three years, and its cost has tripled. Businesses on University Road are collapsing, and citizens spend hours in traffic before reaching their offices. In North Karachi, the KMC abandoned work on 7000 Road despite collecting cutting fees. The deplorable state of Jehangir Road also raises serious questions about the administration's priorities."He dema nded that the provincial transport minister, the Sindh government, and the 'occupier mayor' explain how long this destruction of the city will continue.The JI leader noted that 24 children have died this year after falling into open manholes, with fatalities increasing annually. For a city of 35 million people, only 300-350 buses are operational. Sharjeel Memon continues making new announcements-pink buses, scooters, double-deckers-but nothing materializes. Heavy traffic has become a killer: over 800 accidents have occurred this year and more than 250 young people have lost their lives due to heavy vehicles. The entire city is hostage to the dumper, trailer, and tanker mafias.Electricity outages of 14-18 hours persist in many areas, and despite earning billions, K-Electric keeps the city in darkness-even police stations lack power. The provincial government's agenda is commercialisation and land-grabbing, with eyes set on Karachi University's land and attempts to take over the Chemical and Biological Cent er. Political appointments from interior Sindh are being pushed into KMC hospitals, and public-sector universities are being set up for failure.Monem Zafar Khan said the land-grab mafia has become active across Clifton and the city under the mayor's patronage. Walls of parks-including Umar Sharif Park and Beach View-are being demolished for encroachment. Jamaat-e-Islami is the only party standing with the people at every step, restoring parks and installing 35,000 manhole covers through community effort. The party is fighting a case in NEPRA against load-shedding and raising its voice on every public issue including water, electricity, roads, and transport.
