Rape of woman on motorway case: Court reserves judgment on appeal pleas of convicts against death sentence

Lahore: Lahore High Court (LHC) has reserved judgment on the appeal pleas of two convicts against their sentence in the case related to rape of woman on motorway.

A two members bench of LHC presided over by Justice Shehbaz Ali Rizvi heard the appeal pleas.

The convicts Abid Malhi and Shafqat Bagga have filed appeals against the decision of death sentence to them.

The counsel for the convicts said trial court did not take correct review of facts. Our stance has not been heard correctly in trial court.

He said court should declare the decision of death sentence null and void and order for our release.

Prosecutor Madam Rahila Shahid opposed the appeal pleas saying Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) has given correct decision. Death sentence has been awarded to the criminals on merit. Solid evidence are available against both of the culprits. The appeals be dismissed.

The court reserved the judgment by initiating proceedings.

The ATC had awarded death sentence to both of them on March 20, 2021.

Both the criminals had challenged ATC decision in LHC on March 25, 2021.
