Karachi: Jamaat-e-islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan inaugurated the distribution of 1,000 manhole covers to ensure the safety of citizens, particularly children, on Wednesday in the New Karachi Town.Speaking to media representatives on the occasion along with the New Karachi Town Chairman and others, Monem Zafar Khan demanded the authorities to safeguard children in Karachi from tragic deaths.He said New Karachi Town has constructed 600 streets, gifted a water park, and supplied clean water to 20,000 homes. He said the performance of New Karachi Town is commendable for preparing one thousand manhole covers to help prevent accidents and protect the city's children.Monem Zafar urged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to also distribute manhole covers in their respective towns. He said all promises made by the 'imposed mayor' have proven false, as deadlines are announced and then withdrawn. He added that citizens are suffering daily due to the poor condition of Ja hangir Road, 7,000 Feet Road, New Karachi roads, M.M. Alam Road, and Manghopir Road.He said the PPP's vision is to turn Karachi into a city of ruins, and that no project of the Sindh government appears close to completion.He criticized Murtaza Wahab for announcing the closure of hydrants without making arrangements to supply water to citizens through pipelines. More than 40 percent of the city, he said, depends on water tankers.Referring to Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon's claims of ongoing development, Monem Zafar questioned which development project has actually been completed so far. He said the entire city has been dug up, while Jahangir Road has become a symbol of failure for the Sindh government, having been rebuilt three times in five years.Monem Zafar Khan said that incidents of children falling into open manholes and losing their lives are continuing unabated.He said JI has developed a network of parks across the city and revived sports grounds. He added that JI-run towns have set an excelle nt example of public service by addressing sewerage issues, constructing roads, laying paver blocks, asphalt carpeting, installing street lights, rehabilitating schools, and completing numerous other development projects.He said JI has so far paid Rs 7.8 billion in outstanding dues to employees across its nine towns. He reiterated that the 'Haq Do Karachi' movement is ongoing and said no government is willing to truly own Karachi. He recalled that former Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced a Rs 1,100 billion package, while the Sindh government has now announced an Rs 84 billion grant for the Karachi Transformation Plan. He termed such announcements misleading and urged an end to hostility against Karachi.Monem Zafar Khan said that on average, each Union Council (UC) in Karachi has 2,500 to 3,000 manholes. He criticized the 'imposed mayor' for announcing a grant of Rs 100,000 per UC while K-Electric has started sending Rs 60,000 bills to each UC for the past two months. He called this hypocrisy and sai d all promises, including action against the parking mafia, have proven false, as the parking mafia remains active even outside the KMC building.New Karachi Town Chairman Muhammad Yousuf said that over the past year, more than 27 people, including children, have died after falling into open sewers across the city. He said the Water Corporation, chaired by Murtaza Wahab, is not prepared to install manhole covers and instead shifts responsibility to others. To protect children in New Karachi Town, he said, 1,000 manhole covers have been prepared.He announced that any resident requiring a manhole cover can obtain one by bringing their CNIC and a photograph of the open manhole. He added that over the past two and a half years, New Karachi Town has spent Rs 90 million on resolving water and sewerage issues, despite these matters not falling within its jurisdiction. He said water has been supplied through pipelines to 20,000 homes where there had been no water for 15 to 20 years.Meanwhile, Monem Zafar Khan, a long with Gulberg Town Chairman Nusratullah, attended the ongoing Gulshan Soccer Football Championship 2025-26 at 16 Star Football Ground, Federal B Area, Block 16. He met the players, encouraged them, and said that JI has always supported the promotion of positive activities among youth.
