Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan on Saturday said that Pakistanis were forced to purchase petrol at an all time historic high price under the regime of the Pakistan People Party and the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz. He said that the sit-ins against the petrol levy had become the voice of 250 million people of the country, as the party's protest outside Governor House entered its 21st day.Speaking to the media, Monem Zafar said the shutter-down strike observed on September 3 had proved that the people had rejected the petroleum levy. 'Rs85 is being collected from the people against every litre of petrol. Rs1,337 billion has been collected during the tenure of Shehbaz Sharif,' he said. 'The price of diesel has gone up by Rs233 and petrol by Rs178 during the tenure.'He said the government had 'snatched the right to live' from the people. 'The trading community and industrialists are all worried. If the wheel of industry does not turn and business does not take place, people become un employed. People are being forced to commit suicide because they do not have money for their children's bread. In despair, people are ending their lives,' he said.Zafar commended citizens for making the strike successful and said the rulers had 'crushed the people under inflation.'The JI Karachi chief also criticised the PPP and MQM, saying they were promoting ethnic divide. 'PPP has no sympathy for Sindhi-speaking people. If PPP was concerned about Sindhis, 7.8 million children would not be out of school,' he said.He said despite Rs4,000 billion being spent on education, the literacy rate had declined. Citing data, he said there were 27,000 educational institutions in interior Sindh and 4,000 in urban areas. 'There is not even a washroom facility in 10,000 educational institutions. This has become a combination of incompetence and corruption,' he said.Monem Zafar said it had become the habit of the rulers to push Sindh into the 'darkness of ignorance.' He added that the literacy rate in Khairpur, San ghar and Dadu was only 33 percent.'PPP people kept asking what answer they would give to Benazir. What answer will you give to Allah on the Day of Judgment?' he asked.He also raised concerns over the health sector, saying hospitals in the province had been destroyed. 'No one is asking about the parents of children who died at the Valika Hospital. More than 200 children have contracted HIV,' he said.Zafar said a school in Delhi Colony had been closed on court orders and children were being forced to study sitting on the road. 'Neither the education minister nor the commissioner bothered to go there,' he said.Zafar further said JI would not leave the people alone in these circumstances. 'Victims of injustice also come to the sit-in and people from every walk of life are joining. The sit-ins will continue until our demands are approved. God willing, we will force the tyrant rulers to their knees,' he said.
