Water supply must be restored immediately to Gulshan-e-Hadeed: Monem Zafar

Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan demanded that the Water Corporation must ensure the immediate restoration of water supply to Gulshan-e-Hadeed.The JI leader was addressing participants, here on Monday, at a protest camp set up on the main road against the suspension of water supply for the past seven months in Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Steel Town.He asked how long will the public continue to buy expensive water from the tanker mafia? The government must come to its senses and not ignore the peaceful protest of water-deprived citizens; otherwise, the situation may escalate to the extent that people block the National Highway.Due to the incompetence, mismanagement, and lack of interest in solving public issues by the Pakistan Peoples Party's provincial government and the 'usurping mayor,' who is also the chairman of the Water Corporation, half of the city is deprived of water today. He said the same situation prevails in Gulshan-e-Hadeed Phase 2.1 Extension and Steel Town, where w ater has not been supplied for the last seven months. Jamaat-e-Islami stands with the people of Gulshan-e-Hadeed and citizens across Karachi, and the struggle for the rights of Karachiites and resolution of their problems will continue, he said.Monem Zafar Khan further said that previously, the Bulk Water Supply Department used to provide water to Steel Mills and Gulshan-e-Hadeed. If the responsibility of water supply has now been given to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, then it is its duty to ensure water supply. Otherwise, the Bulk Water Supply Department should be reactivated and water should be supplied to the entire area through it.If machinery, cables, employees, or other resources are required for this purpose, it is the responsibility of Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab to provide them, he said, adding that the 'usurping mayor' cannot evade responsibility. He said that the PPP is part of the federal government, and the President, Senate Chairman, Deputy Speaker, Chief Minister, Mayor of Ka rachi, as well as the national and provincial assembly members from this area all belong to the PPP. All three town chairmen of District Malir and the Gulshan-e-Hadeed UC chairman are also from the PPP, and the party's corruption, mismanagement, and incompetence are visible across the entire district. He said that on September 24, 2024, the CEO of Steel Mills wrote a letter to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board stating that the water management would now be their responsibility. After that, water supply became irregular and later, from July 2025, water was completely suspended. The JI made full efforts, wrote letters, and held meetings with relevant authorities, but the issue was not resolved.According to local residents, water lines of three inches were laid at a cost ranging from Rs 60 million to Rs 150 million, through which a four-inch pipe was brought, and it was announced that Murtaza Wahab would inaugurate it. However, it later emerged that in ten days, only one foot of water had filled the line. In such a situation, how can water be supplied to a population of thousands? Murtaza Wahab left without inaugurating the project. Now it is being said that 16-inch pipelines will be laid in the area.Former UC Chairman and former Ameer District Muhammad Islam, Ameer District Malir Syed Mufakhar Ali, and District Secretary Kamran Nawaz also addressed the protest camp. On the occasion, former PASLO Union President and Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Information Secretary Zahid Askari, PASLO President Aasim Bhatti, Deputy Ameer District Qadar Gul, and others were also present.
