Islamabad: The government and opposition have initiated consultations on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commission members. The government has begun considering the names of former judges and bureaucrats for these positions, while key government allies are in favor of appointing former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa as the Chief Election Commissioner.

According to sources, discussions between the government and opposition on the appointment of the CEC and members of the Election Commission have commenced. The government has started deliberations on the names of former judges and bureaucrats for these posts. Sources indicate that significant government allies support the nomination of former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa as the Chief Election Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is also considering the names of former Chief Justices Nasir-ul-Mulk and Tassaduq Hussain Jillani. PML-N will finalize a name before consulting President Asif Ali Zardari and its coalition partners.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) also held discussions yesterday with its founding chairman, Imran Khan, regarding the names of former judges and bureaucrats. PTI is considering the name of Orya Maqbool Jan for the post.

According to sources, if a consensus is not reached, a parliamentary committee will be directly formed. The government and opposition will each propose three names to the committee for consideration.
