Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting today to address serious traffic challenges across the province and directed that the traffic situation in Lahore be streamlined within 30 days.During the meeting, officials briefed the Chief Minister on modern traffic management systems, road safety measures, and challan enforcement for violations such as helmet use and rooftop passengers. They highlighted that 20 major amendments have been introduced in Punjab's six-decade-old Traffic Act. Repeat offenders will face vehicle auctioning, while government vehicles violating traffic laws will be heavily penalized.A 30-day grace period has been approved to eliminate one-way violations, and U-turns will be remodeled to enhance road safety. The meeting also mandated immediate payment of 'diyat' (compensation) to families of road accident victims.Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif stressed that marriage halls without proper parking will not be allowed to operate and called for org anized parking facilities at all venues. The government also approved a province-wide crackdown on underage drivers, with vehicle owners facing up to six months imprisonment for violations. Rooftop passenger violations on buses will also face strict enforcement, and 'chingchi' rickshaws will be banned on five model roads in Lahore to improve traffic flow.The Chief Minister underscored that vehicles speeding to reach other cities will face stern action, emphasizing that traffic rules must be enforced uniformly. She warned that if the traffic police fail to improve road safety and traffic management, a new department may be created to address the issue. She highlighted that persistent violations and disorder reflect a weak writ of the state, and strict compliance will be expected.
