Islamabad: The 18th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was observed Saturday.

Born in Karachi in June 1953, Benazir Bhutto struggled for democracy, rule of law and women empowerment throughout her life.

The April of 1986 is still remembered as the most iconic month in Pakistan's democratic history when despite a brutal Martial Law in the country, a jubilant crowd of over two million people took to the streets of Lahore to welcome their revered young leader Benazir Bhutto who was returning home from exile.

She ran a highly popular and inclusive electoral campaign which culminated in her party's victory in the general elections in 1988 and she became the first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan and the entire Muslim World.

Benazir Bhutto also won 1993 elections before another exile which ended when she returned to Pakistan in October 2007, and got martyred two months later on this Day in Rawalpindi among thousands of her supporters.

Her party won a significant majority in the general elections and formed government in 2008.

Pakistan People's Party has arranged special events across the country today to pay glowing tribute to her selfless leadership as a champion of democracy and a saviour of human rights.

The main ceremony to mark her death anniversary is underway at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto near Naudero in Larkana.

A large number of party workers and leaders from different parts of the country have attended the gathering to pay homage to their beloved leader.
