Does Punajb govt run the courts: SC

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) while expressing resentment over presenting letter by Punjab government for withdrawing the petitions against the shifting of Sharif family sugar mills to cotton areas has raised question why does the Punjab government want to withdraw the petitions.

The court remarked the case is in the court then how will the problem be solved. Does Punjab government run the courts.

The court gave these remarks during the hearing of the petitions filed against the shifting of Sharif family sugar mills to cotton areas.

The case came up for hearing by a 3-member bench of SC presided over by Justice Ijazul Ahsan here Friday.

During the hearing of the case the counsel for Punjab government requested the court to withdraw the petitions from the SC.

Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar while expressing displeasure over it asked the question what does it mean. You want to withdraw the case why.

The representative of Punjab Industries and Commerce Department told the court the issue of shifting of sugar mills has been resolved. Permission has been given to mills.

Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar remarked how can Punjab government withdraw the case by writing a letter. Withdraw this letter immediately.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked Punjab government should file its plea as per procedure. We will review it.

Imtiaz Siddiqui counsel for Ashraf Sugar Mills told the court sugar mills have started crushing. The contempt of court pleas are pending hearing against the sugar mills too.

Tariq Rahim, counsel for JDW SUGAR MILLS told the court he has attached some documents in the case and he should be allowed to review the new petition.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till February 28 on the plea of lawyer Tariq Rahim.
