ECP decides to hold LB polls in Punjab under new local government act

Lahore: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to hold Local Bodies (LB) polls in Punjab under new local bodies act.

According to media reports ECP now will hold polls under new law instead of Local government act-2022 which was recently approved by Punjab Assembly.

According to new law 9 councilors will be elected directly in every union council. These polls will be held on non party basis.

It is feared PTI candidates will not be able to contest polls.

According to sources PTI will not succeed to field its candidates because party is not having electoral symbol. If PTI backed candidates succeed as independents they will not be able to join PTI at any cost. Under new law it is incumbent on newly elected councilors to join political party within 30 days.

There is another problem for PTI that its intra party case is pending with Election Commission since the last 19 months. EC has suspended hearing of this case due to stay order from Lahore High Court. No decision of this case has come so far.
