Islamabad: Eight volunteer workers have died and seven others injured due to a landslide during work to restore the water channel of Danuor Nullah in Gilgit.

The injured have been shifted to the hospital and emergency has been imposed in Gilgit's hospitals.

According to the GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq, the incident also left seven others injured. All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where emergency services were immediately activated to manage the crisis.

The volunteers were reportedly repairing a damaged water channel when a sudden mudslide buried them under tonnes of earth and rocks.

Police said four individuals were pulled out from the debris in critical condition during the rescue operation. Faizullah Faraq said that the search and rescue efforts have now been completed.

Meanwhile President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed deep grief and sorrow over Gilgit landslide tragedy. In a statement, he extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased volunteers.

He paid tribute to the volunteers who rendered their lives for the sake of humanity. The President also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured volunteers.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in landslide incident in Gilgit. The Prime Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

The Prime Minister directed that the injured be provided with immediate medical assistance. He paid tributes to the volunteers who rendered their lives for humanity.
