Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan Ameer Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that the Gul Plaza tragedy had completely exposed the Pakistan Peoples Party. The JI supreme leader was addressing a press conference held at Idara Noor-e-Haq - the JI Karachi Headquarters, on Monday. He said that the international standard requires one fire station for every one hundred thousand people. Yet a metropolitan city like Karachi has only twenty eight fire stations.On the occasion, he demanded Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to step down over the tragedy. He also raised several questions; The public must know why fire brigade vehicles did not arrive on time. Why did the snorkels fail to work? Why was water unavailable? Where were the PPEs (Personal Protection Equipment)? Why did the vehicles lack diesel? Why were chemicals unavailable? He directed the JI Karachi team to gather a massive force within the next fifteen days for a massive 'Let Karachi Live March'. 'I will personally go street by street and neighborhood by neighborhood to prepare for it.'Further talking about the tragedy, he said the fire department has sixteen hundred sanctioned posts for staffers, out of which four hundred have already retired, he said. 'The last proper training for fire fighters took place eleven years ago. Firefighters don't have complete kits. They do not even have masks. In such a situation how can firefighters enter burned buildings and rescue victims?' 'The fire brigade operates directly under the KMC. This raises a question for the imposed mayor as well. You collect taxes under the name of MUCT, which include a fire tax. Where does that money go? Why do staff not receive uniforms, kits, and other essential equipment?' If building owners fail to keep exits clear, on what basis do officials of the Sindh Building Control Authority approve those buildings? They do so because they receive extortion money, he said, adding extortion system runs from every institution all the way to Zardari House. A complete mafia system operates in this city, he added.Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said those who imposed the PPP and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Karachi and Karachiites, are also hand in gloves and equally responsible for the miserable conditions of the mega city. 'Those who imposed these feudal lords and landlords on Karachi must answer what made them place such people over us,' he said while addressing the establishment. 'At times our children fall into open sewers and die. At times Karachi residents get crushed under heavy traffic. Sometimes they wash away in the rain. When fires break out, no one arrives to rescue them,' he said while underscoring the miseries of Karachiites.The people of Karachi wanted a Jamaat-e-Islami mayor, but their mayoralty was taken away and a PPPP mayor was imposed. MQM could not win even a single polling station in this city, yet it received dozens of National Assembly and Provincial Assembly seats. Those who created this filth must clean it themselves. 'Where are the PDMA and NDMA? These institutions run on t he funds of the people of Pakistan. Saylani, Chhipa, Alkhidmat, Edhi, other NGOs, and ordinary citizens carried out relief work on their own. Some gave water. Some set up lights. Some rescued people. The public performed the duties of the state,' he said. 'Pakistan has companies whose firefighting equipment serves the entire world, yet Pakistan's fire brigade lacks complete equipment. This situation stands as deeply tragic.
