Karachi: FEBRUARY 13 (SABAH): Jamaat-e-islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar has said that the party will stage a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly today (Saturday), February 14, to demand a rightful and empowered local government for Karachi.He made these remarks while inaugurating a three-day flower show organized by TMC Gulberg at Lal Qila Park in Federal B Area, Block 8, Azizabad, here on Friday. He was accompanied by District Gulberg Ameer Kamran Siraj, Gulberg Town Chairman Nusratullah, Vice Chairman Muhammad Ilyas, and UC-5 Chairman Arif Muneer.Addressing the ceremony, he said the JI will continue its struggle to secure the rights of Karachi's citizens and will not leave the people alone. 'We will not allow anyone to usurp the city's rights. Those who have deprived citizens of their right to live will be held accountable,' he said.He stated that the development work being carried out in nine towns under the JI is visible to all. Over the past two and a half years, the party's town administration s have spent Rs2 billion on water supply and sewerage-responsibilities that fall under the provincial government. He added that while the JI is actively engaged in development projects, it is also striving to obtain administrative powers from the provincial government, which, he alleged, is unwilling to devolve authority and resources.He emphasized that Karachi contributes the highest tax revenue in the country and deserves adequate civic facilities in return. 'Karachi is counted among the world's major cities, yet it has been deliberately neglected,' he said, adding that the Pakistan Peoples Party has ruled Sindh for the past 18 years.He criticized delays in major projects, saying the K-IV water project has remained incomplete for 21 years without adding a single drop of water for citizens. He also highlighted prolonged electricity load-shedding of 12 to 15 hours daily and blamed the provincial government for failing to provide basic services such as water, electricity, and roads. He termed projects like Karimabad Underpass and the Red Line as examples of incompetence and corruption. 'If the provincial government denies people their right to live, the public will not remain silent. We will secure our rights,' he asserted.Speaking on the occasion, Kamran Siraj said that the restoration of Lal Qila Park marks the fulfillment of another promise. 'Colors are spread everywhere, streets and roads are illuminated. We are moving towards making Gulberg Town vibrant and shining,' he said, adding that development and the struggle for Karachi's rights will continue despite limited resources and powers.Gulberg Town Chairman Nusratullah congratulated residents of Azizabad on the restoration of the park and welcomed guests to the annual flower show. He said work is also underway in the health and education sectors. 'We are not doing a favor to the people of Karachi; we are spending their own tax money on them. Karachi runs the country's economy, yet it is denied its due share,' he said.
