Peshawar: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leaders on Wednesday demanded the immediate reopening of CNG stations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of protests if supplies are not restored within next three days.Speaking at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club, Emir JI KP central, Abdul Wasi, flanked by provincial General Secretary Sabir Hussain Awan, Peshawar district Emir Bahrullah Khan Advocate, Information Secretary Noorul Wahid Jadoon and National Labor Federation Provincial General Secretary Samiullah Khan said that more than 600 CNG stations had been shut for nearly two months, causing widespread economic hardship.Wasi said around 500,000 vehicles in the province depend on CNG, about 80 percent of them are commercial, including taxis, rickshaws, vans, and buses. He added that approximately 550,000 families linked to the sector were facing serious livelihood challenges due to the closures. He cited data indicating that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa produces about 550 million cubic feet of gas per day against a requirement of 120 MMCFD, while CNG stations consume around 45 MMCFD, equivalent to 1.5 million liters of petrol, helping reduce fuel imports by nearly 4 billion rupees per month and contributing significantly in taxes.Referring to Article 158 of the Constitution and a restraining order by the Peshawar High Court, Wasi termed the continued shutdown 'unconstitutional.' He alleged the federal government was diverting the province's gas to other regions, including Punjab, under the pretext of US-Iran tension, and accused the provincial government of supporting the policy. He said representatives of business bodies and the CNG sector had held multiple meetings with government officials, urging immediate restoration of supply through an executive order.Bahrullah Khan Advocate warned that if CNG stations are not reopened by May 1, the party will launch a province-wide protest movement.
