London: Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK observed Indian Independence Day as a Black Day, highlighting India's continued refusal to implement United Nations resolutions concerning the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
A protest demonstration was held outside the Indian High Commission in London under the leadership of Fahim Kayani, President of Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK. A large number of Kashmiris participated in the demonstration alongside members of the Sikh community.
Sikh protesters also observed Indian Independence Day as a Black Day and raised slogans in support of Khalistan and their political demands.
Addressing the demonstration, Kashmiri leaders said that the policies of the Modi government in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir had been exposed before the international community. They called on India to end human rights violations, release Kashmiri political prisoners and respect the fundamental right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to determine their own future.
Speakers stressed that the Kashmir dispute remains unresolved and that lasting peace and stability in South Asia cannot be achieved without a just and peaceful resolution of the dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Fahim Kayani said that observing Indian Independence Day as a Black Day was intended to remind the international community that millions of Kashmiris continue to be denied their right to self-determination.
He urged the United Nations, the United Kingdom and the wider international community to take meaningful steps to address human rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and press for a peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute.
The demonstrators called for the release of political prisoners, an end to human rights violations and demographic changes in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and implementation of the UN resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
The protest concluded with calls for international action to secure a just and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute and uphold the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.
