LHC moved against 27th constitutional amendment

Lahore: 27th constitutional amendment has been challenged in Lahore High Court (LHC).

The petition has been filed by citizen Hassan Latif through his counsel Advocate Maqsat Salim.

The petitioner has requested the court to nullify the 27th constitutional amendment declaring it in conflict with the basic structure of the constitution .

Prime Minister (PM), speaker National Assembly (NA), law ministry and others have been made respondents in the petition.

The petitioner has taken the plea the Senate has accorded approval to 27th constitutional amendment tabled by the incumbent government. Several powers of Supreme Court (SC) are being entrusted to Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). The clause to grant life immunity to Chief of Defence Staff is part of this constitutional amendment.

Advocate Maqsat Salim took the plea before the court this amendment runs contrary to the original spirit, distribution of powers and sovereignty of judiciary. The court should nullify the 27th constitutional amendment declaring it unconstitutional.
