LHC seeks reply from govt on petition seeking fixation of new price of wheat

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought reply from federal government on miscellaneous petition seeking fixation of new price of wheat. A two members bench of LHC presided over by Justice Baqar Ali Najafi took up the petition filed by advocate Bilal Ahmad for hearing Tuesday. Advocate Bilal Ahmad has taken plea in the petition that government imported 35 lac tons wheat despite availability of 40 lac metric tons wheat in the country. The step of importing wheat by federal government caused loss to the tune of 1 billion dollars to national kitty. It has been further said in the petition Punjab government has maintained the same price which was fixed last year. The inflation has surged by 20 percent but rate for farmers was not increased. Advocate Bilal Ahmad requested the court to order government to fix new price of wheat. Court should summon report from federal government with reference to wheat crisis. It is pertinent to mention here that the court had called reports from government of Punjab and agriculture department Punjab in its order dated April 30. LHC while seeking reply from federal government till May 14 adjourned the hearing of the case.
