Islamabad: President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari met with Dr. Ali Ardeshir Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and regional stability.

During the meeting, President Zardari emphasized the need to further strengthen Pakistan-Iran ties, highlighting the shared bonds of religion, history, and culture. He welcomed Iran's support for Pakistan's position on Kashmir and reaffirmed Pakistan's solidarity with Iran against Israeli aggression.

Dr. Larijani conveyed messages of goodwill from Iran's Supreme Leader and President and announced that Iranian authorities had directed preferential market access for Pakistani products. He also noted Iran's appreciation for Pakistan's efforts in regional security and counter-terrorism.

The leaders discussed a range of bilateral initiatives, including improving trade relations, increasing facilities for pilgrims and traders, enhancing railway connectivity, and finding mutually feasible solutions for the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline. The Iranian delegation set a target of $10 billion for Pakistan-Iran trade.

President Zardari expressed gratitude for Iran's assistance to flood-affected communities and noted that recent high-level meetings signify positive progress in Pakistan-Iran relations. Both sides also exchanged views on regional, global, and counter-terrorism issues.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both countries.
