New york: Pakistan has reaffirmed its support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned approach to transitional justice, emphasizing that national ownership, reconciliation and inclusive institutions are essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in Syria.

Speaking at the Arria-Formula Meeting on Transitional Justice and Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, welcomed the steps taken by the Syrian Government, including the establishment of the National Commissions for Transitional Justice and for Missing Persons, as well as efforts to develop a draft law on transitional justice.

The Permanent Representative underscored that effective cooperation between Syrian national institutions and relevant international mechanisms should complement nationally led efforts while fully respecting Syria's sovereignty and national ownership. He stressed that transitional justice is vital to promoting reconciliation, restoring trust, strengthening social cohesion, and addressing the legitimate expectations of victims and their families.

Reaffirming Pakistan's steadfast support for Syria, Ambassador Asim emphasized that the international community should assist the Syrian Government and people in advancing lasting peace, stability, reconciliation and reconstruction. He reiterated that Pakistan would continue to stand with Syria in its pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future.
