Lahore: Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the counsel for the Election Commission (EC) to appear before it after obtaining the directives in connection with petitions filed against holding Local Bodies (LB) election on non party basis in Punjab.
The petitions against holding LB polls on non party basis in Punjab came up for hearing Wednesday in LHC.'
Justice Sultan Tanvir heard the petitions filed by JI, PTI and others .
The court ordered counsel for EC to appear before it after obtaining directives.
During the hearing of the case the court inquired will the election of chairman and vice chairman be held direct.
The counsel for Punjab government said the election of Senate speaker is held indirect. The elected representatives elect their head.
The court remarked was the election of chairman and vice chairman held indirect in previous act too.
Justice Tanvir Sultian said was the election of district Nazim held indirect.
The court directed counsel for the Punjab government to present comparison report in this regard.
The court remarked it should be told after making comparison with previous act what was situation in the past.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said Local Bodies (LB) elections in Sindh were held direct. LB elections are held direct all over the world.
The court remarked government has assured to hold LB polls on party basis.
Justice Sultan Tanvir said all the candidates will run their election campaign under their party flag. Party tickets will be issued to all candidates.
The court remarked legislation is power of parliament. Judiciary cannot interfere. What were differenes with Yasi Nawaz.
Kanwar Arsalan told.
Justice Sultan Tanvir said answers to several questions have yet to come in new local bodies act. We will give full opportunity to election commission. We want to provide full opportunity to all respondents.
The court remarked why the Election Commission is not holding LB polls in Punjab.
The court adjourned hearing of the case till next week.
