Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities concerned to expedite work on the project of Battery Energy Storage System.

He was presiding over a meeting in Islamabad today to review long-term planning for electricity supply in view of future needs, as well as the progress of the country's exports in light of the current international situation.

The Prime Minister said solar energy and other renewable energy sources are the future of power sector.

He said despite disruptions in oil supply due to the tense regional situation, no energy crisis was witnessed in the country because of substantial share of renewable energy in electricity generation.

Shehbaz Sharif instructed to formulate a comprehensive strategy to further expand renewable energy sources at the national level.

He said supply of exports to the Gulf countries despite global tension and challenges is underway as continuity of exports to the Gulf countries was ensured owing to the effective diplomacy.

The Prime Minister directed Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to arrange ships to boost the country's exports via sea routes.

The meeting was informed that fifty-five percent of total electricity generation comes from renewable sources, whereas forty-five percent is generated from fossil fuels.

It was briefed that planning is underway to enhance electricity generation from renewable sources to ninety percent over the next ten years, while reducing generation from fossil fuels to ten percent.

It was further informed that diplomatic efforts are afoot with the Gulf countries for facilitation of the national exports in view of recent regional tension.

The meeting was apprised that demand of Pakistani agricultural products in the Gulf countries has been consistently increasing.
