Karachi: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Karachi Deputy Ameer and KMC Opposition Leader Saifuddin Advocate on Friday said the Pakistan Peoples Party-led Sindh government of 'usurping' resources and powers meant for local governments, saying that many of Karachi's problems could be resolved if development funds were released to town and union committee chairmen.He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a new snorkel, a refurbished tractor-trolley and an electric vehicle at the Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town Municipal Corporation. JI East District chief Naeem Akhtar and Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town Chairman Dr Fawad also addressed the gathering.Saifuddin said that 85 union committees headed by JI representatives had not been provided development funds.'The Sindh chief minister and the 'occupying' mayor continue to make announcements, but are not practically willing to give anything to Karachi,' he said.He said the JI was fighting for the rights of citizens while also undertaking development and municipal works in areas under its control.'The vehicles inaugurated today had previously been left standing in a dilapidated condition, but the JI town chairman got them restored,' he said, questioning why the vehicles had not been repaired earlier when resources and funds had allegedly been available.Saifuddin said conditions in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and other JI-administered towns were gradually improving and congratulated the town chairman for his efforts.He said the people of Gulshan-i-Iqbal would see their expectations fulfilled, but criticised the Sindh government and Karachi mayor for what he described as poor performance. 'The people are paying the price for the incompetence of the Sindh government and the mayor,' he said.Talking about the Red Line project, he said University Road had been dug up and the resulting disruption was causing hardship across the city, with residents of Gulshan-i-Iqbal among the worst affected.Saifuddin said the Sindh government's annual budget stood at around Rs3.5 trillion, while the budget availab le to town administrations was insignificant in comparison. 'All the funds for Karachi's development are with the Sindh government,' he said.Naeem Akhtar in his address said that since elected representatives took oath, Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town had faced a shortage of snorkels and tractor vehicles, while the available vehicles were in poor condition.He said the town administration had used its own budget to procure a new snorkel and restore a tractor-trolley.'The BRT project has created numerous problems for the town. Sewerage is the biggest issue, but the town has no budget for sewerage works,' he said.Dr Fawad described the inauguration as a day of gratitude for Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town, saying the administration was serving residents despite limited resources. 'Providing heavy machinery is a gift for the people of Gulshan-i-Iqbal,' he said.Dr Fawad also announced a programme to provide education cards to 600 children studying in six schools run by the town.Municipal Services In-charge Rao Shamshad, Dir ector Administration Abdul Rais Ahmed, XEN MandE Javed Bhayo and other officials were also present at the ceremony.
