TED x Lahore at the British Council inspires bold ideas for climate action under global Countdown initiative

Lahore: TED x Lahore returned on Sunday at the British Council Library, bringing together leading voices from Pakistan and beyond to share bold ideas under this year's global theme: Countdown.The event featured a diverse group of speakers who shared perspectives from science, policy, art, and community action. Reflecting on the event, James Hampson, Country Director, British Council Pakistan, said: 'We were proud to host TedX Lahore at the British Council. It is an event which embodies our commitment to connecting people to ideas, opportunities and each other. Countdown is a theme which speaks for itself, and we're there to give a platform to voices who want to see changes that can shape a fairer, more sustainable future.'The speaker line-up reflected a rich diversity of perspectives. The British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott CMG OBE, pre-recorded her talk and spoke about strengthening UK-Pakistan climate partnerships and the importance of inclusive climate resilience.Dr. Ahmad Ali Gul, Director of the Centre for Disaster Management at UMT, shared his pioneering work on flood modelling and adaptation strategies. Abuzar Madhu, performing artist, writer, and activist, used storytelling and theatre to bring attention to the environmental struggles of communities living along the Ravi River.Osama Rizvi, an international economic and energy analyst, explored the political economy of climate change and the need for more sustainable energy transitions.Mehak Masood, climate change and sustainability expert, offered insights drawn from her work in both policy and the private sector.Tanvir Ahmad, Energy Officer and Country Lead (Climate Change) UNHCR Pakistan, described how renewable energy solutions are transforming refugee and host communities, from solar-powered water systems to fuel-efficient cooking stoves.Nyal Mueenuddin- documentary filmmaker gave a talk about his work in documenting floods in Pakistan and finally Romina Khurshid Alam- Coordinator to Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination had a one on one conversation with Ben Warrington the Punjab Representative of the British High Commission.TED x Lahore 2025 was a reminder that while climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, it is also an opportunity to come together and reimagine the future. Events like these play an important role in sparking conversations, inspiring new ideas, and building the partnerships that can turn ambition into action. For decades, British Council libraries in Pakistan have served as more than repositories of books - they are vibrant 'third culture' spaces where people come together to learn, create, and exchange ideas. Hosting TED x Lahore highlights how libraries can act as catalysts for civic dialogue, cultural connection, and innovation.
