Birmingham: Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK President Fahim Kayani has written to the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Warren A. Stephens, expressing serious concern over remarks made by the U. S. Ambassador to India during his visit to Srinagar, Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, describing Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India.
In his letter, Fahim Kayani highlighted the concerns of British state subjects of Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that the unresolved status of Jammu and Kashmir is not simply a foreign-policy matter but directly concerns their history, families, identity and fundamental right to self-determination.
Fahim Kayani emphasised that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised dispute considered by the United Nations Security Council. He referred to relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 47 (1948), which envisaged a process through which the people of Jammu and Kashmir would determine their future.
'The United States, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, carries a particular responsibility to respect the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir, ' Kayani said.
He warned that statements by senior American diplomats appearing to determine unilaterally the status of the disputed territory risk prejudging an unresolved international dispute and undermining the aspirations and right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK has urged the United States Government to clarify its position and ensure that its diplomatic representatives refrain from statements that could be interpreted as endorsing the unilateral claim of either party over the disputed territory.
Fahim Kayani also called on Washington to use its diplomatic influence and permanent membership of the Security Council to support a peaceful and just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, consistent with international law and the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He requested Ambassador Stephens to convey these concerns to the U. S. Department of State and seek clarification regarding the remarks attributed to the U. S. Ambassador to India.
