ATC Lahore orders handing over 16 Jinnah House attackers to military court

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore ordered on Thursday to hand over those accused of attacking the corps commander’s house in Lahore's Cantonment area to the army, whereby the military courts are to initiate trials against them.

In an unprecedented show of vandalism, PTI supporters had attacked and caused damage to the historic Corps' Commander’s House — originally known as Jinnah House and which once served as the residence of the founding father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah — hours after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case on May 9.

Irfan Athar, Commanding Officer, 54 Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Battalion had sought the custody of 16 accused of involvement in the attack which includes former MPA Mian Muhammad Akram Usman, the son-in-law of former Punjab’s senior minister Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed.

According to the officer, the suspects prima facia have been found involved with the commission of offenses under the provisions of Official Secrets Act-1923 read with Section 2(1)(d) and 59 (4) of Pakistan Army Act 1952.

As per the court's verdict, the prosecution did not oppose the commander's request and subsequently, the court ordered for all 16 accused persons to be remanded over to the officer.

The accused include Amar Zohaib so of Nazeer Ahmed Sheikh, resident of Lahore, Ali Iftikhar son of Iftikhar, resident of Lahore, Ali Raza son of Ghulam Murtaza, resident of Lahore, Muhammad Arsalan son of Muhammad Siraj, resident of Lahore, Muhammad Umair son of Abdul Sattar, resident of Lahore, Muhammad Raheem son of Muhammad Naeem Khan, resident of Lahore, Ziaur Rehman son of Muhammad Azam Khursheed, resident of Lahore , Waqas Ali son of Muhammad Ashraf, resident of Lahore, Raees Ahmed son of Shafiullah, resident of Swat, Faisal Arshad son of Zafar Ahsan, resident of Lahore, Muhammad Bilal Hussain son of Manzoor Hussain, resident of Lahore, Faheem Haider son of Farooq Haider, resident of Lahore, Arzam Junaid son of Junaid Razzaq, resident of Lahore, Mian Muhammad Akram Usman son of Mian Muhammad Usman, resident of Lahore, Muhammad Hashir Khan son of Tariq Bashir, resident of Lahore and Hassan Shakir son of Shakir Hussain, resident of Lahore.

The commanding officer said that the above named accused by committing the offenses under the said laws, have become subject to the Pakistan Army Act-1952 and are exclusively liable to be inquired, investigated and triable by the Military Authorities in Court Martial.

The commanding officer said that it revealed that the above accused are in judicial lock up in case FIR Nos 96 and 852, both dated 10 May 2023, at Camp Jail Lahore by the orders of this Honourable Court. It is requested that in the lights of the above provisions of law, the custory of above named accused by delivered to Commanding Officer in accordance with Section 549 of the Cr. P.C. and the Criminal Procedure (Military Offenders) Rules-1970 for inquiry, investigation/trial to the extent of charges under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act-1923.

Meanwhile, the PTI chief has filed a petition with the Supreme Court of Pakistan urging it to take notice of the "undeclared martial law" in parts of the country and the ongoing aggressive crackdown on his party.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan, through his lawyer Hamid Khan, has requested the apex court to probe into the government's decision to call "in the aid of the armed forces in the Federal Capital Territory, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in the purported exercise of powers under Article 245 of the Constitution".

"The dictated exercise of this power by the federal cabinet in the absence of objective conditions for the exercise of that power is clearly violative of the fundamental rights," the petition stated.

Imran Khan also pleaded to the SC to appoint a commission led by a SC judge to probe the events surrounding his arrest on May 9 and subsequent incidents.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan has said that last year on the 25th of May commenced our descent into fascism. While three long marches by PDM during the 3.5 years of PTI government were allowed without any hindrance, we faced the full force of state terror.

In a statement issued on twitter on Thursday, Imran Khan said that houses broken in the middle of the night and PTI office bearers and workers kidnapped. And then whoever got to Islamabad faced tear gas, rubber bullets and police brutality, he said.

Imran Khan said that some of us thought it was one off but that was just the beginning. Today the largest and the only Federal party is facing the full fury of state power without any accountability. Over 10,000 PTI workers and supporters in jail including senior leadership and some facing custodial torture, he said.

Imran Khans aid that on the pretext of arson on 9th May (condemned by the entire PTI leadership) the state is trying to dismantle the party including “forced divorces” and trying PTI members in military courts. He said that those in PDM and the journalist community who are cheerleaders for this yazeediyat should know that this is not dismantling PTI but our democracy i.e. our freedom.

However this attempt to enslave us will fail as we have a politically aware young population who despite media being muzzled gets its information from Social Media, Imran Khan concluded the statement.

PTI former leader Ayesha Gulalai joins PMLQ

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) former leader Ayesha Gulalai joined Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PMLQ) on Thursday.

She will resume politics after long time with PMLQ after leaving PTI.

She said she had known in 2017, situation is favourable to Imran Khan but she uphold the flag of truth.

In press conference along with Pmlq politicians on Thursday she said our prayers are for the families of martyrs. Every citizen stands by Pak army.

She further said “she sworned against ‘Yazid’ in 2017.”

That time she said I was aware to whom the situation is suitable. Power was on Imran Khan side that time. Things I told that time are now becoming true one by one.

People including me joined PTI that time not for any personality but for the brighter Pakistan, she said.

Never used my position against national security, she said.

She said many political parties invited in last five years however I haven’t joined anyone. Now I am joining Pmlq, because this is the party who is the party of Quaid-e-Azam, Ch Shujaat is respected politician; this is the person whose life and death is for Pakistan.

Ch Shujaat has many services for Pakistan; she said I am inspired of him that’s why I am adopting his discipleship. He remained Prime Minister but still he doesn’t have any corruption scandal.

On the occasion Ch. Shujaat thanked Ayesha Gulalai for joining Pmlq.

He further said this government constituted my Ch. Salik Hussain was made minister. I never made recommendation to give my son ministry.

Hypocrisy and arrogance never successes forever, who caught of these two failure becomes his fate he added.

He said I never bear arrogance; I will take ahead all of them.

LHC seeks reply from Punjab govt on constitution of JIT to probe into May 9 incidents

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought reply from Punjab government on constitution of JIT to probe into May 9 incidents.

Care taker government of Punjab had constituted a JIT to investigate into attack on Jinnah House.

A petition was filed against it in LHC which came for hearing before single bench of LHC led by Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan.

The caretaker CM Punjab, home secretary, and chief secretary have been made respondents in the petition.

The court has sought reply from Punjab government on a petition filed against constitution of JIT.

It is pertinent to mention here home department Punjab had constituted JIT in respect of 9 cases registered in different police stations in Lahore.

LHC seeks reply from Punjab govt on arrests made after May 09 incidents

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought reply from Punjab government in regard to arrests made after May 09 incidents.

The petition on detentions under MP-3 and 16 came up for hearing before single bench of LHC led by Justice Amjid Rafiq Thursday.

The court summoned Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Advocate General Punjab for assistance.

Justice Amjid Rafiq remarked tell us detention orders have been issued in respect of how many people.

Hearing the petition of PTI former assembly member Zainab Umair , justice Amjid Rafiq sought detailed and comprehensive reply from Punjab government.

The petitioner had challenged MPO-3 and 16.

Counsel for Punjab government opposed the petition and declared it non maintainable.

Court dismisses interim bail plea of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi in corruption case

LAHORE: Anti Corruption Court has dismissed the interim bail plea of former Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Chaudhry Pervez Elahi in alleged corruption in development projects case.

The interim bail plea came up for hearing before judge Ali Raza of Anti corruption court Thursday.

Chaudhry Pervez Elahi did not appear before the court on expiry of interim bail period.

Counsel for Pervez Elahi filed exemption plea from attendance in the court on medical grounds.

The counsel told the court Pervez Elahi is feeling pain in chest, therefore, he cannot appear.

The prosecution while giving arguments said medical certificate is fake.

The court remarked show the reports I just give decision.

The judge of anti terrorism court while directing to submit medical report in the court immediately adjourned the hearing for some time.

The exemption plea of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi was accepted on earlier hearing too.

On resumption of hearing the court rejected the exemption plea.

The court announced the order to dismiss interim bail plea of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi being not persuaded.

May 09 is a black day in the history of country: PM Shehbaz

PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said that May 09 is a black day in the history of the country and reaffirmed its commitment to take stern action against miscreants involved in attacking the civil and military installation on this day.

Chairing a meeting regarding the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Governor House Peshawar on Thursday, PM Shehbaz Sharif said the people involved in terrorist acts will be trialed according to law. He further said the ransacking and putting on fire of the Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar exposed the barbaric mindsets of the attackers, who had no regard for humanity and national heritage, and added that such acts were committed by the terrorists.

PM Shehbaz Sharif said those involved directly or indirectly will be dealt with iron hands. He said the miscreants’ attacked civil and military installations and did what our enemies couldn’t do in 75 years. On this occasion, the Prime Minister was briefed about the overall law and order situation in the province.

He said the May 9 devastation was beyond imagination and even the enemy was not able to carry out such deplorable incidents in the past. He further said that Radio Pakistan was a historic station established before the independence of Pakistan in 1935. The announcement of Pakistan’s independence was also made from this station and the Radio Pakistan Lahore station in 1947.

He said millions of Muslims, under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, rendered sacrifices for the motherland, adding the violent incidents of May 9 and 10 put the entire in a state of grief and anger. The prime minister said the ransacking of the historic building was against the spirit of patriotism and love for national heritage.

He said that living nations protect their national heritage and archive them for future generations. However, on May 10, he said, nearly 100 years old archive records of Radio Pakistan were burnt to ashes. PM Shehbaz Sharif highly appreciated the bravery and courage of injured employees of Radio Pakistan Naseer and Abdullah against rioters and gave them compensation cheques.

May 09 cannot be repeated: Marriyum Aurangzeb

PESHAWAR: Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has said May 9 cannot be repeated and those involved in this incident will be awarded exemplary punishment.

She held the miscreants attacked again on May 10 with all arrangements. The historical archives which were priceless were burnt.

She stated that several staff members were injured while protecting the building.

She remarked our precious asset was burnt. No concession will be given to miscreants and armed bands. The armed bands were having sticks and petrol bombs.

Confrontation among state institutions will ultimately harm country: Liaqat Baloch

PESHAWAR: Naib Emir Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Liaqat Baloch has stated that confrontation among the state institutions will ultimately harm the country.

While addressing the elections 2023 convention at Peshawar on Thursday, Liaqat Baloch stated Parliament, judiciary and establishment were locking horns while following the custom of “tit for tat” instead of obeying the spirit of law and justice. He stated that the state institutions were locking horns with one another which was proving detrimental for the country as well as the nation.

He stated that the people were being crushed by inflation, unemployment, bribe, corruption and violation of merit but the national leadership was hell-bent on its own interests whereas the masses were continuously suffering. Continuous mistakes committed by the political leadership, state institutions, superior judiciary and civil bureaucracy since last 75 years ultimately laid them bare in front of public, he noted.

He stated that the masses were full of emotions of revenge and dreadful reaction and added that economic crisis, injustice, corruption and selfishness have overpowering the 250 million people.

Liaqat Baloch expressed his resolve that Jamaat-e-Islami with the help of Almighty Allah as well as people power will change the whole scenario by bringing Islami revolution in the country.

While talking to journalists, he stated that entire nation was agreed on “May 25, Martyrs Reverence Day” and added that martyrdoms of officers and personnel of Armed Forces were respectable and honorable. He added that May 09 heinous incidents disheartened the families of martyrs, saying national unity was vital for paying tribute to the sacrifices of martyrs.

Liaqat Baloch stated public support as well as sympathies with the armed forces was a guarantee of strong defense which is why it is compulsory to commemorate “Martyrs Reverence Day” but also stressed upon all the stakeholders to be careful about severity of emotions and their dreadful reaction.

He also stressed upon the need of holding elections in 2023 for putting an end to ongoing uncertainty as well as restoration of public confidence and added that free, fair and transparent polls were solution of political crisis.

No difference between May 09 miscreants, terrorists: PM

PESHAWAR: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has said there is no difference between May 09 miscreants and terrorists.

" The heart rending incidents of May 09 and 10 grieved people of Pakistan. There is no difference between May 09 miscreants and terrorists. setting ablaze historical and national heritages is what type of patriotism. The miscreants will be punished as per law and constitution, he said this while addressing a ceremony in Radio Pakistan Peshawar here Thursday.

PM visited Radio Pakistan Peshawar on the occasion of Yaum-e-Takreem-e-Shuhada-e-Pakistan Thursday.

DG Radio Pakistan Peshawar gave briefing to PM with reference to May 09 and 10 incidents.

PM while addressing the ceremony said " I am much grieved over seeing the historical building of Radio Pakistan. This is the historical building wherein the voices of independence of Pakistan echoed on August 14, 1947 and the entire world was told Pakistan has come into existence.

But unfortunately the heart wrenching incidents of May 09 and 10 grieved people of Pakistan, he said adding torching and destroying historical and national heritage is what type of wisdom and patriotism. No other act can be more anti state than this.

He held Chaghi monument was located close to it which was burnt to ashes. This monument was masterpiece of Pakistan defence power. The archives were also burnt.

The nations endear their identity and historical heritage but here they were reduced to ashes, he remarked.

The enemy cannot cast evil eyes on Pakistan till the doomsday, he observed. The miscreants will be awarded punishment as per law and constitution. The job which could not be done by our arch enemy was done by our own persons as terrorists and enemy.

The PM while announcing to pay the salaries to employees of Radio Pakistan said the salaries should be paid forthwith to employees.

I direct information minister to ensure repair work of radio Pakistan immediately, he added.
