Cabinet Committee Reviews Fuel Supply, Strengthens Market Oversight After Price Adjustment

Islamabad: The Cabinet Committee to Monitor Petrol Prices, chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, reviewed the petroleum supply situation and market conditions following the recent price adjustment, emphasizing continuity of supply, market discipline, and enhanced monitoring mechanisms.

The Committee conducted a comprehensive assessment of petroleum stocks, import plans, and refinery operations. Officials informed the meeting that the supply position remains stable, with diesel stocks covering approximately 25 days, petrol sufficient to meet current demand, and crude oil stocks at around 12 days, supported by incoming shipments and scheduled imports.

The Petroleum Division briefed that import arrangements are progressing smoothly through commercial procurement and government-to-government agreements, while refineries continue operating at optimal levels. The Committee highlighted the importance of energy supply in supporting agriculture, fertilizer production, transportation, and industrial activity.

In response to recent price movements, the Committee stressed vigilance to prevent hoarding, speculative practices, and supply disruptions. It also emphasized monitoring demand trends and discouraging unauthorized storage within the regulatory framework.

The gas supply situation was also reviewed, including stock positions of SNGPL and SSGC, with discussions focusing on balanced allocation between domestic and power sectors, especially amid seasonal demand and increased reliance on LPG.

The Committee underscored the importance of the digital dashboard developed by OGRA for real-time monitoring of stocks, sales, and supply conditions. While acknowledging progress, it noted that data reporting from over 12,000 petrol pumps remains below expectations and called for full operationalization of the system.

The Finance Minister directed stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate data sharing, while OGRA was tasked with enforcing compliance and accelerating digitization across the supply chain. Pakistan State Oil (PSO) was also instructed to enhance reporting coverage across its retail network.

To strengthen implementation, joint teams comprising officials from the Petroleum Division, OGRA, FIA, and PSO will be deployed at selected petrol pumps in Islamabad to improve data entry, transparency, and compliance.

The Finance Minister reiterated that ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply, improving transparency, and protecting consumers remain key priorities, supported by effective coordination and enforcement.
