Deprivation of basic rights leads to intolerance: Naeemur Rehman

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Emir Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that a nation is continuously kept deprived of its basic rights, the situation creates intolerance in the society.

Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman expressed these views at the final session of the two-day Medical Education Conference, hosted by the Pakistan Islamic Medical Association at a local hotel.

Addressing the conference, the JI leader said that an elite class, emerged on the basis of wealth accumulated by the means of capitalism and feudalism, as well as the establishment rule over the country. The two elements of the ruling elite form governments on the basis of power, he said, adding that in such a scenario neither tolerance nor development of the society is possible.

Talking about Karachi, Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that some 35 million Karachiites have been kept deprived of basic facilities since long. At least half of neighborhoods in the city are supplied water in lines just once in a month, he said, adding that a large number of neighborhoods in the megalopolis never received water supply so they purchase water through tankers.

He added that petrol prices, a major factor for inflation in the society, were increased twice in one week by whooping Rs60 per liter. The government has failed to provide basic health, education, transportation and other facilities, he said. The JI leader further said in this scenario only the non governmental organizations were playing a role but NGOs by any means could not be a substitute to the government.

Engineer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the city has been facing injustice since long. There is not a single hospital for mental health of  around 35 million people in Karachi. Jobs on bogus documents in the public sector of the city was another burning issue. The previous government had announced Rs1100 billion package for Karachi but practically did nothing on the ground, he said. The JI Karachi chief further said that local bodies elections as well as students union elections were crucial for the progress and development of the city.
