Lahore: The Government College Dramatics Club (GCDC) is set to present the timeless masterpiece Anarkali as its 135th annual production. Originally written by renowned playwright Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj in 1922, the play was specially crafted for the dramatics club but has never been staged by the institution-until now. After a century-long wait, Anarkali will finally be performed as an original production from February 24 to 28 at the Bokhari Auditorium, Lahore.

Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj, a celebrated writer, translator, and dramatist, was born on October 13, 1900, in Lahore. A graduate of Government College Lahore, Taj was an active and dedicated member of the dramatics club. His passion for theatre led him to pen Anarkali at just 22, a masterpiece that has since become a milestone in Urdu drama, known for its memorable characters and heart-touching dialogues.

The enduring popularity of Anarkali is evident from its thousands of performances worldwide. The story has also inspired numerous films across the Indian subcontinent, including classics like Mughal-e-Azam, Anarkali, and Supreme Ishq.
