Karachi:Internationally acclaimed Islamic economist, thinker and author Dr. Muhammad Umar Chapra passed away at the age of 93 years.Dr. Muhammad Umar Chapra was considered among the most prominent economists of the Islamic Ummah. He rendered great services in Islamic economy, Islamic finance and economic thinking for decades. He was awarded King Faisal International Prize in Islamic Studies in 1990 for his academic and research services. He was also awarded several awards by Pakistani, Turkish and other international institutions.Dr. Muhammad Umar Chapra was born on 1st February 1933 in Mumbai, his family migrated to Karachi after the establishment of Pakistan, where he completed his studies. He secured highest qualification in commerce from Karachi and Sindh Universities and later on secured PhD degree in economics and sociology from University of Minnesota, America. After completing education, he taught in several American universities.Dr. Muhammad Umar Chapra shifted to Saudi Arabia in 1985 and was a ppointed as Finance Adviser in Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA). From the tenure of Shah Faisal, he played an important role in progress of economic and financial system of Saudi Arabia for three decades. Later on he remained associated with Islamic Research and Landing Institute of Islamic Development Bank.Dr. Muhammad Umar Chapra was among the founders of Islami Jamiat Talba and remained Nazim of Karachi organization. He was influenced by thoughts of Syed Abul A'la Maududi and was comrade of Professor Khurshid Ahmed, Dr. Zafar Ishaq Ansari, Khurram Jah Murad and other Islamic thinkers. He is considered as prominent personality in Islamic movement. He wrote nearly 15 books and research papers. His prominent book 'Towards Just Monetary System' is considered as the most effective interpretation of the Islamic Financial Ideology.
