Karachi: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Munem Zafar Khan has said that the party is committed to serving Karachiites and raising its voice for the constitutional and legal rights of mega city's estimated 35 million residents.Unfortunately, Monem Zafar Khan said, the city's residents continued to suffer from a host of civic problems, including shortages of drinking water, poor sanitation, inadequate public transport and deteriorating roads, adding that the Pakistan Peoples Party's 18-year rule in Sindh had become synonymous with poor governance.Addressing a reception organised by Jamaat-e-Islami in Qayyumabad to honour Hajj pilgrims, volunteers who participated in the party's collective sacrificial animal hides campaign, party workers and students who secured A-1 grades in the matriculation examinations, he said Qayyumabad was also facing an acute water shortage and called on the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to replace ageing pipelines and ensure a regular supply of water to residents. Suppl ying water through tankers at a cost of billions of rupees, he said, could not be regarded as a sustainable solution. He strongly criticised the authorities for registering criminal cases against citizens protesting for their rights, describing such actions as unjust. He said Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its efforts to mobilise the public and campaign for their legitimate rights.Monem Zafar Khan maintained that despite limited powers and resources, the party had continued to serve citizens, while holding the Sindh government responsible of depriving Karachi of its basic rights. Providing water, sewerage, healthcare, education and essential infrastructure was the government's responsibility, he added, but the provincial administration had consistently neglected the city.He said the party's elected local government representatives were working beyond their formal mandate to address water, sewerage and other civic issues despite limited resources.Deputy Emir of JI Korangi district Mansoor Feroz and Qayyu mabad area nazim Zamarrud Awan also addressed the gathering. Area nazim Hilal, deputy area nazim Saeed Feroz and other party leaders attended the event.During the ceremony, commendation certificates were presented to students who secured A-1 grades in the matriculation examinations, while honorary certificates were awarded to party office-bearers and workers. Residents, participants in the collective sacrifice campaign, community elders, youth and children also attended the event.
