National Assembly Passes 27th Constitutional Amendment with Two-Thirds Majority

Islamabad: The National Assembly of Pakistan on Wednesday evening passed the historic 27th Constitutional Amendment with a two-thirds majority. A total of 234 members voted in favor, while only 4 voted against. The voting also accommodated ailing and infirm members, who were allowed to cast their votes while seated.

Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Khurshid Shah participated in the voting from a wheelchair, earning applause from fellow members for his determination. Members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) voted against the amendment, while other opposition parties staged a walkout in protest. Bells were rung in the lobbies to recall members present there for voting.

During the session, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar also introduced amendments to Article 6, clarifying provisions related to the establishment of a Constitutional Court and the jurisdiction of state institutions. The clause-by-clause approval was conducted peacefully, and the bill was formally passed by the lower house.

Government benches echoed slogans of 'Long live democracy' and 'Parliamentary supremacy' during the proceedings.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq described the approval as a historic milestone, stating: 'Today, Parliament has crossed a historic constitutional milestone, demonstrating the continuity and resilience of democracy.'
