Rawalpindi: Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami North Punjab Dr. Tariq Saleem has announced that, on the appeal of JI Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, a protest sit-in will be launched in Rawalpindi from September 9 against what the party describes as an illegal levy on petroleum products and the government's anti-people economic policies.Addressing a meeting of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and office-bearers from Rawalpindi, Murree and Rawalpindi city districts at the JI Rawalpindi office, Dr. Tariq Saleem said party workers and members of the public from Rawalpindi and surrounding areas would participate in the sit-in on a daily basis. The meeting was attended by Secretary General JI Punjab North Iqbal Khan, district leaders Syed Arif Shirazi, Raja Jawad and Ghulam Ahmed Abbasi, along with JI Youth presidents, district administrators of Talaba Arabia, district Nazims of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba and other office-bearers. Dr. Tariq Saleem also constituted a steering committee to oversee the Rawalpindi sit-in. The committee comprise s Iqbal Khan, Deputy Ameer Punjab Hafiz Tanveer Ahmed, Deputy Qaim Raja Mumtaz Hussain, Mian Yasir Ali Gujjar and Inam-ul-Haq Awan.Dr. Tariq Saleem alleged that the government had extracted around Rs4,000 billion from the pockets of the poor and ordinary citizens through petroleum levies and other charges. He criticized what he called excessive privileges enjoyed by the ruling elite, including government vehicles, official staff and other facilities. The JI leader further alleged that national resources were being controlled by political groups dominated by landlords, influential individuals and political families, resulting in what he termed an unjust economic system imposed on the people. He said the Rawalpindi sit-in would be part of Jamaat-e-Islami's broader campaign against petroleum levies, inflation and policies that, according to the party, were placing an increasing financial burden on ordinary citizens.
