Senator Talha Mahmood advocates for global economic equity at 152nd IPU Assembly in Istanbul

Istanbul: Senator Muhammad Talha Mahmood delivered a powerful address at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, representing Pakistan at a time of significant global economic transition. The Senator is part of a high-level delegation that includes Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, and MNA Sharmila Farooqi. In a remarkable show of national solidarity and adherence to the Prime Minister's austerity vision, all members of the delegation are personally bearing their own expenses for this official visit, ensuring no burden is placed on the national exchequer during these challenging times.

During the Session of the IPU Governing Council and the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Senator Talha Mahmood presenting the Pakistan's stance emphasized that the global economy stands at a critical juncture due to recent unilateral tariff measures. He referenced the World Bank Global Economic Prospect of June 2025, noting that such disruptions are projected to stifle global growth to a mere 2.3 percent. The Senator emphasized that developing nations like Pakistan are on the front lines of this shift, facing a triple threat of unemployment, investment hurdles, and poverty reduction challenges that directly impact the livelihoods of millions in the textile and agricultural sectors.

Despite these significant global headwinds, Senator Talha Mahmood highlighted Pakistan's remarkable economic resilience, specifically pointing to the country's achievement of its first current account surplus in 14 years during 2025. This milestone was supported by a surge in IT services, strong export performance, and increased remittances. He concluded his address by urging fellow parliamentarians to champion a fair and sustainable global order rooted in partnership rather than polarization. He called for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that the benefits of globalization are shared by every nation.

The delegation also have a meeting with President Istanbul Bar Association and got detailed briefing about the justice system of Trkiye. The delegates praised the historic cordial Pak-Turk relations and expressed hope that collaboration between bar associations of both countries will be a good step in advancing these already cordial relations as well as beneficial for strengthening justice systems of both countries.
