ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Chaudhry Azam Nazir Tarar Advocate attended the closing ceremony of the first ever 3 day teacher training workshop for law faculty members “Designing and Teaching Effective Law Courses for Legal Academics” as a Chief Guest.The workshop was the outcome of collaboration between the Directorate of Legal Education (DLE), Pakistan Bar Council, the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law and the LUMS Learning Institute. The workshop took place over June 1-3 and involved Deans and Law professors from 21 institutions of legal education from across the country. The workshop comprised of active learning sessions focused on course structure, methods of instruction and assessment, along with substantive sessions on both private and public law. Usama Malik, Director, Directorate of Legal Education, PBC and Dr. Sadaf Aziz, Dean Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law was present at the occasion.Senior Judges from the Lahore High Court attended the event including Justice Ali Baqir Najafi, Justice Jawad Hassan and Justice Asim Hafeez. Senior members of the Pakistan Bar Council including Chaudhry Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon and Hassan Raza Pasha also graced the occasion.The Law Minister appreciated the intent and design of the workshop and the collective experience and expertise of the participants. He spoke about the renewed efforts of the Pakistan Bar Council and the Directorate of Legal Education headed by Usama Malik to ensure conformity with Legal Education Rules 2015 and the standards established by the Honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan in Pakistan Bar Council v. Federation of Pakistan reported as 2019 SCMR, 389 where it was emphasized that the “Provision of good quality legal education is inextricably linked with dispensation of justice that the Bar is responsible for ensuring”. Recent directives to ensure a non-practicing allowance for law instructors and the crackdown on sub-standard law colleges are some of the mechanisms for ensuring such standard setting.Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and the Justices Ali Baqir Najafi and Jawad Hassan emphasized the need for life-long education among members of the legal profession through the provision of continued professional education. Moreover, former President Supreme Court Bar Association Ahsan Bhoon and Chairman Executive Committee of the Pakistan Bar Council Hassan Raza Pasha also praised the initiative taken by Usama Malik and Dr. Sadaf Aziz to uplift the standard of law faculty members across Pakistan in the shape of this workshop.Dr. Parvez Hassan, Advocate Supreme Court and member of the Board of Trustees of LUMS, reflected on the founding vision of the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law. It was the first in the country to establish the 5 year BA/LLB programme and makes an ongoing effort to engage in curricular development and promotion of an active research and learning culture. The Learning Institute at LUMS is also the first in the country to promote a constant upgradation of pedagogical skills amongst university professors based on scientific and evidence based studies to identify successful teaching methodologies.Disallowance of justice poses serious challenges to Pakistan: Bilal Azhar KiyaniJHELUM: Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Economy and Energy Bilal Azhar Kayani has said that Pakistan is in the grip of an acute crisis when it comes to dispensation of justice. He said that the people will have to join hands with legal fraternity and political leadership of the country for restoration of judiciary’s lost glory and for its efficient functioning. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took tough but right decisions during the last year and now they have started bearing fruits. People will be reaping the benefits of those decisions.This was stated by Bilawal Azhar Kayani while talking to a delegation led by District Bar Association Jhelum President Sheikh Ikram Advocate who met him at his office. The delegation that included former president Jhelum Bar Association Raja Toqeer Ahmad, General Secretary of District Bar Arbab Shahid Kayani, Jiant Secretary Raja Khurram Nisar and other lawyers. Former MPA Chaudhry Saeed Iqbal and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Jhelum leader and senior lawyer Mubarak Kayani were also present on the occasionBilal Azhar Kayani said government’s decision to allocate Rs 1100 billion for development in the budget for next fiscal year will be a catalyst for economic recovery of Pakistan. We will deal with the economic challenges and rout the forces behind political turmoil that has been fueled by violence and vandalism.Kiyani said that bar and bench make the judicial system and they have to play their part. Referring to an apex court bench, he said it has exposed double standards of the judiciary and damage its reputation like never before and the Chief Justice must put his house in order.Lawyers have played a historic role for upholding the constitution, rule of law and democracy in the country. He said that lawyers, political workers and media have always raised their voice for the constitution, law, democracy and civil liberties in the country. It is high time that we all join hands for revival of judiciary’s lost glory, he said.Kayani said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif takes personal interest in the problems faced by bar associations across the country including the Jhelum Bar and for the welfare and wellbeing of lawyers. The delegation presented their problems and demands, on which Bilal Azhar Kayani assured the delegation to play his role in solving the problems and said he will also contact Law Minister Senator Azam Nazir to solve these problems.On this occasion, the delegation appreciated Bilal Azhar Kayani’s public services in NA-60 and Jhelum. The delegation also congratulated Kayani on the construction of Shantatajada Road and Link Road on Saturday. Kiyani told the lawyers and people at large gathered at his office that resolving issues of the people and their in NA-60 and Jehlum, was his top priority. He said a network of highways is being built and in this regard two main roads of Jhelum city, five kilometers long each, were inaugurated the other day. The construction and rehabilitation of these highways will bring ease in the daily life of the people. Furthermore, significant progress is being made to fulfill the longstanding demand for the Lilla Jhelum Road. He assured that efforts are underway to address other challenges, including electricity, education, and healthcare in Jhelum, and assured that people will see concrete steps in near future.PM Shehbaz urges global & national action to beat plastic pollution on World Environment DayISLAMABAD: On the occasion of World Environment Day being observed today (Monday), the Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has taken several steps to take Pakistan on a path to sustainable use of resources, and has emphasized the urgent need to combat plastic pollution under the global theme “Beating Plastic Pollution.”Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to combat plastic pollution and embark on a journey of plastics reduction. As one of the top 10 countries in the world for plastic pollution, with an estimated 70 percent of plastic waste being improperly disposed of, Pakistan recognizes the urgent need for action. The government has prioritized the adoption of environment friendly alternatives and is actively working on the Plastics Prohibition Regulation 2023 for ICT. This regulation will establish a comprehensive framework and timeline for phasing out single-use plastics, while also leading by example on a plan to reduce and then ban the use of single use plastics by the entire federal government.In a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to reduce plastic waste in Pakistan, the Prime Minister has directed PM House to stop using single-use plastics, which like the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, will lead the way in phasing out and restricting the use of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles in Federal Ministries, Divisions across the board. By doing so, the government aims to establish a sustainable and responsible approach to plastic usage and waste management, ensuring the protection of the environment and the well-being of future generations.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged that Pakistan has actively participated in crucial international and national level discussions to develop a comprehensive, legally binding instrument aimed at ending plastic pollution, with a target date set for 2024. The Government of Pakistan recognizes the significance of ensuring inclusivity and equity within the agreement, emphasizing the need for the treaty to prioritize that no one is left behind. The Prime Minister called upon all stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, civil society organizations, and the media, to renew their commitment in fight against plastic pollution and preserving the planet’s biodiversity for future generations.The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of empowering local communities, supporting recycling initiatives, and promoting a circular economy that minimizes plastic waste.There were serious challenges the country had been facing, however, the govt had rescued it from default: Ishaq DarISLAMABAD: Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar says the government will announce a pro-investment, people welfare-oriented, and business-friendly budget for the next financial year.Talking to a private news channel, Ishaq Dar said the government will provide as much relief to the public as possible. The Minister the government was introducing long-term policies aimed at sustainable economic growth in the country and achieving the economic targets.Criticized those who were announcing dates for default, Ishaq Dar said there were serious challenges the country had been facing, however, the government had rescued it from default.Meanwhile, a joint delegation of Pakistan Stock Exchange and Mutual Funds Association of Pakistan called on Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.Talking to them, the Finance Minister said PSX was at one time one of the best performing stock markets.He assured the group that their concerns would be addressed and measures would be taken to encourage investment in Pakistan.He hoped that PSX would reverse the trend and once again become one of the top performing stock markets in the region.
